The Engineering Division of GRSE has developed capabilities to design and manufacture Engineering Equipment/ Items with the Launch of “First of it’s kind” Portable Assault Bridge, Double Lane Bridge installed in Flaghill, Dokalam, Sikkim. GRSE targets to continue its efforts on indigenization proportions of over 90 % in all its ships slated for future delivery. Taking the Government’s Make in India Initiative forward, the ASW Corvettes and LCUs delivered by GRSE over the last few years, had an indigenous content of over 90%, a major step towards achieving self-reliance in state of the art warship design and construction. Presently the shipyard is building 03 P17A Advanced Frigates, 04 Survey Vessels (Large), 08 Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts, 01 Fast Patrol Vessel, 01 Ocean Going Passenger and Cargo Ferry for Cooperative Republic of Guyana and 06 Patrol Boats for Bangladesh Govt. GRSE has developed in-house capabilities to design & build most modern warships in the country. The shipyard has been profit making and dividend paying company for the past 28 years. Post modernization and revitalization, the shipyard has the capacity to build 20 ships (08 large & 12 small) concurrently. GRSE is playing a key role in defence preparedness of India to produce the most modern warships through indigenization for the country aimed at self-reliance. Apart from Ship Building & Ship Repairs, GRSE is also diversified into engineering business with a product profile of pre-fabricated steel bridges, various deck machinery items & assembly/testing/overhauling of marine diesel engines. GRSE has emerged as a leading shipyard of India, building a wide array of vessels ranging from 05 ton boats to 24600 ton Fleet Tanker including world class Frigates and Fast Attack Crafts. The shipyard, with its modern shipbuilding infrastructure, state-of-the-art Virtual Reality Lab and a 100+ strong design team drawing on 61 years of shipbuilding expertise can certainly lay claim to being a ‘Master Builder’ for amphibious ships in India. GRSE’s primary role has been building warships and other vessel for the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard. The 1 st warship for export by India was delivered by GRSE to Mauritius in 2014, Offshore Patrol Vessel, CGS Barracuda.

GRSE, a Mini Ratna Category 1 Company has so far delivered 107 warships to Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, Mauritius Coast Guard and Seychelles Coast Guard & is the only shipyard to achieve this Centennial Mark. The 1 st warship of Independent India, INS Ajay was delivered to the Indian Navy in 1961, within one year of being taken over by the Ministry of Defence. The Company was acquired by the Government of India in the year 1960 and there was no looking back since then. In 1934, the Company was registered under the Indian Companies Act, 1913 and started its journey as Garden Reach Workshops (GRW) Limited. The genesis of Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) dates back to 1884 when it started its journey as a small workshop to repair vessels of River Steam Navigation Company.
